Understanding E-Numbers

This quick guide helps you read additive labels with confidence and prioritize what needs deeper Halal verification.

Core Principles

  • - E-codes are standardized additive labels used mainly in Europe and many global import databases.
  • - An E-number does not automatically mean Haram or harmful; it identifies a category and approved use.
  • - The same additive family may contain both Halal-safe and doubtful manufacturing sources.
  • - Verification should include origin, processing method, and certification status from the producer.

High-Priority E-Numbers to Verify

  • - E120 (Carmine): Commonly insect-derived and generally not Halal for most consumers.
  • - E441 (Gelatin): Source can be bovine, porcine, fish, or mixed. Source and slaughter method matter.
  • - E542 (Edible Bone Phosphate): Requires source clarity because animal origin is possible.
  • - E471/E472 family (Mono-/Diglycerides): Could be plant or animal based, requires supplier proof.
